  2021 ALL-MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL - Inoke Moala, Indiana State,...Moala put together one of the best seasons by an Indiana State defensive lineman in program history as the Mishawaka, Ind. native tied for the Missouri Valley Football lead in both sacks (8.0) and tackles for loss (13.0), while adding six quarterback hurries and a pair of forced fumbles. The redshirt senior had a stretch where he recorded a tackle for loss in seven of eight games at one point, while posting at least four tackles in four different games.

Moala put his mark on the season early as the Mishawaka, Ind. native came out of the gates with a 2.0 sack performance in the season opener against Eastern Illinois. He added to his totals tying a career-high with a 3.5 sack game with a forced fumble against Western Illinois to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors on October 10. Moala continued his onslaught on opposing backfields the following weekend with two more sacks and another forced fumble against Missouri State to highlight his 2021 season. - Indiana State Football

The Florence, Ky. native immediately made an impact in the lineup upon his returning posting 37 catches for 395 yards and three touchdowns over the final five games of the season with a pair of 10-catch contests coming against Missouri State and Southern Illinois.   Kurtis Wilderman passed for 243 yards and rushed for two touchdowns to help Indiana State beat Illinois State 15-10 on Saturday. Wilderman's touchdowns came with 3:50 remaining in the third quarter and 3:58 in the fourth. After Wilderman's second score, Rylan Cole came through on the ensuing Illinois State possession by forcing a fumble that Jalen Moss came up with to set off a celebration on the Indiana State sideline. Peterson Kerlegrand carried it 19 times for 61 yards for Indiana State (5-6, 3-5 Missouri Valley Conference Football). Dante Hendrix had five catches for 55 yards. The win marked Indiana State's first in Normal, Ill. since the 1997 season.   Kenton Wilhoit had a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown and Jarrell Jackson added a diving pick in the final two minutes to lead Indiana State to a 20-14 victory over South Dakota on Saturday. The Redbirds (3-4, 1-3 Missouri Valley Football Conference) had lost three straight games, all to FCS-ranked opponents, but beat the Coyotes, ranked 15th in the coaches poll, with the help of their 10th and 11th interceptions of the season.

Illinois State's Aidan Bresnahan kicked a career-long 47-yard field goal for the game's first points and added a 42-yarder as the half ended for a 13-7 edge. Earlier in the second quarter, Cole Mueller scored on a 69-yard run up middle for the Redbirds. Wilhoit's pick-6 made it 20-7 early in the third quarter. Travis Theis' 5-yard run cut the lead to 20-14 with 11 1/2 minutes to play and the Coyotes began their final possession with 1:42 left only to see it cut short on Jackson's pick on the first play.   Peterson Kerlegrand and Anthony Thompson rushed for two touchdowns each and Indiana State used four final-quarter interceptions to overcome Youngstown State 28-17 on Saturday. Thompson's 12-yard run to start the fourth quarter cut a Penguins' lead to 20-17 and five minutes later, Kerlegrand glanced off a tackler before sprinting 53 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Kerlegrand rushed for 151 yards on 25 carries with Thompson adding 63 yards for Indiana State (4-4, 2-3 Missouri Valley Conference). JJ Henderson led an Indiana State defense with two of the Sycamores' fourth-quarter interceptions. Indiana State has nine picks this season and their four on Saturday was one short of the program record set in 1980 against Eastern Illinois. Joe Craycraft was just 13-of-31 passing for 172 yards and a score but also the four picks for the Penguins (2-4, 1-3).   Anthony Thompson threw two touchdown passes and Peterson Kerlegrand ran for 178 yards and two scores to guide Indiana State to a 37-27 victory over Western Illinois in Missouri Valley Football Conference play on Saturday. Indiana State (3-3, 1-2) led 10-0 after one quarter on the strength of Thompson's 3-yard TD toss to Zach Larkin and Alan Selzer's 35-yard field goal. Kerlegrand upped the Sycamores' lead to 17-0 with a 3-yard TD run at the 9:09 mark of the second quarter. The Leathernecks (1-5, 1-2) got on the scoreboard when Connor Sampson passed to Jack Whyte for a 1-yard TD, but Kerlegrand scored on a 59-yard run just 50 seconds later and Indiana State took a 24-7 lead into halftime.

Thompson and Phazione McClurge connected for an 88-yard score on the Sycamores' third play of the second half to make it 30-7. Sampson threw three TD passes from there for Western Illinois, while Selzer added a pair of field goals for ISU to cap the scoring. Thompson completed 15 of 21 passes for 226 yards for the Sycamores. McClurge had four receptions for 98 yards, while Larkin hauled in four passes for 72 yards. Sampson was 32-of-53 passing for 400 yards and four TDs with one interception for the Leathernecks. Dallas Daniels had seven catches for 143 yards. Ludovick Choquette, Tony Tate and Daniel Bender had TD catches in the fourth quarter. - AP College Football

  Kurtis Wilderman threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Phazione McClurge on the last play of the game to lift Indiana State over Eastern Kentucky 23-21 on Saturday night. Wilderman stepped into the pocket and fired his pass between two defenders to McClurge, who made a leaping catch at the goal line and was knocked nearly out of the end zone. But McClurge leaned the ball just over the goal line while falling and landing on his back. Eastern Kentucky (1-2) had just taken its only lead of the game when Da'Joun Hewitt scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with 49 seconds left. Wilderman was 11 of 17 for 111 yards passing. McClurge finished with six receptions for 75 yards, and he also caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Thompson in the second quarter. Hunter Lunsford recovered a fumble and ran the ball five yards into the end zone for Indiana State (2-1) to open the scoring. Parker McKinney completed 23 of 38 passes for 205 yards for Eastern Kentucky. He threw a 10-yard TD pass to Malik Owens in the first quarter.   SEPT 13 MISSOURI VALLEY TOP PERFORMANCE: LB Matt Thompson, Indiana State - Thompson turned in a career effort on the biggest stage this season as the redshirt senior recorded career highs in tackles (11) and tackles for loss (2.0), while limited Northwestern to just 275 total offensive yards. Thompson saw increased playing time after the first two drives and his entry helped play a factor in limiting Northwestern to just nine first downs and 138 total yards over the final three quarters in giving the Sycamores a chance to keep the game within reach. Thomas' first interception came near the end of the first half and set up a late ISU scoring opportunity.   Michael Thomas turned his second interception Saturday into a 75-yard touchdown and Indiana State opened the season with a 26-21 victory over Eastern Illinois. Thomas, who also had a team-leading 10 tackles, grabbed a deflected pass and raced down the left sideline early in the fourth quarter for a 24-14 lead. Otto Kuhns' scored on a fourth-and-1 sneak with 2:56 remaining to cut the Sycamores' lead to three. The Panthers got the ball back at their 7 after a 49-yard punt but an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone resulted in a safety at game's end.

Backup Sycamores quarterback Michael Haubert extended a 10-7 halftime lead when he weaved his way 44 yards in the third quarter. EIU answered on its next possession on Tyler Hamilton's 4-yard score, set up after Kuhns connected with Demetrius Garrett for a 61-yard pass to the 11. Indiana State got off to a fast start in its first game since the end of the 2019 season, scoring on Peterson Kerlegrand's 3-yard run on the Sycamores' opening drive. Dante Hendrix led off the drive with a reception, his 22nd consecutive game with a catch to set a school record, passing Robert Tonyan's previous mark (2015-16). - Indiana State/AP College Football
